Year 9 Enrolment
Most students enter Melbourne High School in Year 9. For these students it will be one of the most significant and exciting events of their lives. Each year the School is rejuvenated with a new intake of enthusiastic young men.
A centralised selection process is used to admit students into Year 9 at the four Select Entry Schools: Melbourne High School, The Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School, Nossal High School in Berwick and Suzanne Cory High School in Werribee.
The Department of Education and Training (DET) has responsibility for determining the enrolment policy and procedures, which includes conducting the entrance examination and allocation of offers.
How to Apply for Year 9
Students must be either Australian citizens, either by birth or Australian Citizenship, or a holder of a permanent resident's visa at the time of application. Citizens of New Zealand are eligible to apply, however Melbourne High School cannot enrol international or temporary students.

The entrance examination will be held on Saturday 19 September 2020.
Notes for Year 9
In 2021 Melbourne High School accepts 308 students to enter Year 9. Approximately 1500 boys sit the Entrance Examination for entry into Melbourne High School.
Boys who sit the Entrance Examination are ranked according to their aggregate score.
To be considered for selection, a student must reach an acceptable standard in all sections of the Entrance Examination.
The maximum number of students admitted into Melbourne High School and The Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School, Nossal High School and Suzanne Cory High School, combined must not exceed 5% of any one school’s Year 8 enrolment.
At Melbourne High School 15 places are reserved for entry via the Principal’s Discretionary Category. Applicants who missed a place because of the 5% rule or were within 5 marks of the score of the last student offered a place, will be invited by the School to apply under the Principal’s Discretionary Category.
The Principal’s Discretionary Application Form asks for evidence demonstrating academic and co-curricular achievements and a personal statement outlining reasons for wanting to join Melbourne High School. The application must be accompanied by a copy of the candidate’s current mid-year report.
Applicants are shortlisted and a limited number will be called for interview.
