Audition Details:

Venue: Memorial Hall, Melbourne High School

Arrival time: 1:30 pm sharp

Hosts’ welcome: 1:35 pm sharp

‘Rules of the Audition’ distributed at 1:45 pm sharp

Cocktails served at 2:00 pm sharp

Departure time: between 4:30 and 5:00 pm

Regarding the Audition:

  • No scripts or monologues to prepare.

  • Improvisation only; based on a character and a series of scenarios (or situations).

  • Guests will receive a booklet, ‘Rules of the Audition’, that will consist of their character and scenarios that are developed over a series of four ‘episodes’.

The guest’s improvisation will involve acting with other guests and will show the following character qualities:

  • characterisation, including creating an appropriate ‘voice’ or speech patterns for the character (e.g. an upper class person’s manner and the way they speak is very different from someone from the working class)

  • variety (feel and show the different levels and dynamics of a character) and opposites (yelling is one way to show anger; being quiet as you make your point can be a powerful display of emotion)

  • act (it actually means to do, not to talk)

  • voice (projection, clarity of diction, enunciation)

  • manner  & movement (body language; walking; sitting; leaning (etc.) reacting to and interacting with characters)

The guest’s involvement throughout the audition process will show the following personal qualities:

  • attentive

  • collaborative

  • dependable

  • initiative

  • problem solver

  • respectful

  • resilient

  • resourceful

*** You are advised that the audition will be highly competitive as there will be a large number of students auditioning. Agatha Christie’s plays have between 8 – 14 characters, so casting will be ‘tough’.

Guests accepting this invitation agree to the following principles of the production and have the full support of their parents or guardians:

The Play

  • Please note: all Christie’s characters are adults ranging in age from mid 20s to early 80s.

  • Guests likely to be offended by shady dealings, sordid affairs and deceitful conduct should not accept the invitation.

  • Many of Christie’s characters smoke and drink (simulated on stage) so if either offends, do not audition.

  • The plays are long, running around two hours.

  • The choice of Agatha Christie play from the list of titles below will be determined following the audition process.

  • A Murder is Announced

  • Appointment with Death

  • Go Back for Murder
  • Hercule Poirot’s First Case (The Mysterious Affair at Styles)

  • The Mousetrap

  • Murder on the Nile

  • Spider's Web

  • Towards Zero

  • Verdict

  • Witness for the Prosecution

Only serious guests are to RSVP by Thursday 23 May

  1. Download and complete the Approval Form. Download PDF>>

  2. Complete the on-line entry form below. Make sure you type in all the required information.

  • Registrations are NOW CLOSED and all audition slots fully booked.

  • Registrations closed at midnight 23 May and officially closed at 10:00am 24 May.

Important information:

You will receive a confirmation email upon receipt of your registration requesting that you email the audition form by Friday 24 May.

Between Friday 24 and Saturday 25 May, you will receive an email with instructions and your invitation which will include the guest list. At the audition, you will be assigned the role of one of these guests.

If we do not receive the completed form by 24 May, you will not be allocated an audition.

This measure has been put in place to ensure parental approval. Too often we have had students audition, accept the role and then ‘pull out’ because their parents won’t approve their involvement; this affects casting and is totally unfair on others.

** Invitations emailed to approved candidates on 25 May at 8:20 am**
